Topic if the Workshop: Pastel Painting
In this course we will be pursuing pastel painting, looking for the special features of expression with this material and studying works by historical and contemporary artists.
After a theoretical introduction, we will visit the Dresden Old Masters Picture Gallery and look at pastels that are exhibited there.
We will mix our own colours with pigments and use them to make pastel crayons. Afterwards, we will deal with the production of a special pastel support for fabrics that is suitable for painting with chalks.
During the two weeks there will be ample opportunity to work practically with the pastel crayons and to discuss questions of storage and presentation of pastel works with the workshop leader.
Maya Drachsel is a visual artist and head of the painting workshop at the HfBK Dresden.
Two art history seminars (theory and excursions) led by art historian Susanne Altmann will take place over the weekend: Printmaking as an Artistic and Social Medium and Typography and Graphic Design as Visual Art, in which all participants are invited to take part.
